Shepherd Center finishes construction on residential tower

The Arthur M. Blank Family Residences, which has 165 apartments, will welcome its first guests in October.

ATLANTA — The Shepherd Center has finished construction on a 16-story residential tower overlooking Peachtree Road that more than doubles its housing capacity.

The Arthur M. Blank Family Residences, which has 165 apartments, will welcome its first guests in October. It’s named for Blank, The Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United owner who donated $50 million to the project.

The new Buckhead tower cost approximately $120 million, a Shepherd Center spokesperson said.

It fills a crucial need. The Shepherd Center, one of the nation’s top spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation hospitals, says more than half of its patients come from outside Georgia. Previously, the hospital could only provide housing for families for 30 days. The average stay is nearly twice that.

“With the expansion of our housing program, we will reduce the financial and emotional burden on our patients' families so they can focus on learning how to support their loved ones and each other through rehabilitation and as they return to their communities,” Sarah Morrison, CEO of Shepherd Center, said in an announcement.
