She lost her home in an explosion, but she's counting her blessings: 'I thank God that my husband and my child are alive.'

Charla Mark's husband and son have burns all over their body after an explosion destroyed their home.

AUSTELL, Ga. — A heartbreaking photo shows six-year-old Joshua Mark with bandages over his arms and face.

The little boy was sleeping at his home in Austell Sunday night, when a massive explosion destroyed his house.

His father, John, pulled the boy out safely. Family members say John is in worse shape. But Charla Mark says that explosion won't take her spirit.

The Austell mother spoke exclusively with 11Alive Wednesday, while her husband and son are still recovering in the hospital.

"I thank God that my husband and my child are alive today," Mark said.

The wife and mother, who works as a nursing assistant, was at work Sunday night. Her phone kept ringing but she waited to check her voicemail.

When she did, she says she almost hit the floor.

"It was terrifying," Mark recalled. "You went to work, you came back. You don't have no place to stay."

The father and son have burns on their faces and backs. Doctors believe the boy, Joshua, will heal faster. However, both of them have a long road to recovery ahead of them.

Where that road leads, though, is uncertain. The family lost everything in the blast.

"It was a disaster," Mark said.

Family members and neighbors have set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with their medical bills.

But while Charla said she's worried about her future, she's thankful her husband and son are still alive.

Investigators are still unsure of the cause of the explosion.
