JPSO officer shot multiple times in Harvey has died

12:55 p.m. Manhattan Boulevard will be shut down northbound at Lapalco Blvd. Southbound lanes of Manhattan will remain open.

HARVEY, La. -- Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office confirms an officer shot multiple times Wednesday afternoon in Harvey, La has died.

According to Col. John Fortunato with JPSO, an officer in the Street Crimes Unit was attempting to initiate a 'pedestrian stop.'

Fortunato said witnesses report seeing the officer get shot multiple times by a pedestrian.

While no suspects have been arrested, Fortunato said several witnesses in the area have been questioned.

"We have taken several people in the neighborhood, but we can't say for certain if any of those people are that person who shot the officer."

An air unit and a canine unit are being used to search the area.

Fortunato explained that the role of officers in the Street Crimes Unit is to drive around high crime areas and make either pedestrian or vehicle 'stops.'

"The particular objective is to go into these high crime areas and pick and choose who they are going to stop and either alert 911 or take other actions," Fortunado said. "But at his time, we don't have the details about what prompted this stop."

The officer who was shot was transported to University Medical Center and is being treated for injuries.

Reports of an 'officer down' came in around 12:25 p.m. near Manhattan and Lapalco Boulevards.

According to a store clerk at the Dunkin Donuts, 2301 Manhattan Boulevard, an officer was shot near the store.

The clerk told WWL-TV the shooting happened "right outside the door." The clerk also said the store was not robbed.
