JONESBORO, Ga. – A “contest of speed” led to a head-on collision, leaving two dead in Clayton County.

Kyle Michael Nelson, of Forest Park, Ga., was dead at the scene and Lenardo Allen, of Decatur, Ga., was found in critical condition, after an alleged street racer hit another vehicle head-on Wednesday.

Allen, 45, was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Lees Mill Road near the intersection of Bob White Trail, Clayton County Police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

Witnesses told police that just before the crash, Nelson, 23, was seen racing with another vehicle on Lees Mill Road when he lost control of the vehicle, veered into an oncoming lane of traffic and hit Allen’s vehicle, Marbury said.

The Clayton County's Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (S.T.A.R.) Team is investigating drag racing claims. Police have cited speed to be a contributing factor.

While there is a suspect, no charges have been filed.
