ATLANTA -- Several families lost their homes after a southeast Atlanta apartment building caught fire Thursday morning.

The blaze broke out shortly after midnight in an eight-unit building at the Lakewood Forest Apartments in the 2600 block of Old Hapeville Road.

An Atlanta Fire spokesperson said responding crews found flames burning through the building's roof. Six to eight units suffered smoke and fire damage.

A Red Cross disaster team will help 21 residents -- 14 adults and seven children -- by providing them with necessities and emergency shelter.

No one was hurt in the fire, but one man was arrested after he climbed up a fire ladder into a damaged apartment. The man, 20-year-old Derrick Harvey Brown, told police he did not live in the building and admitted he had two bags of marijuana in his coat pocket. He was charged with marijuana possession and taken to the Atlanta City Jail.
