Students among those injured in shooting near Georgia State, university says

Officers said the incident happened around 5 a.m. on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue.

ATLANTA — Four people were shot early Sunday morning near Georgia State's campus, according to Atlanta Police.

Officials with the university confirmed that two students are among those injured.

Officers said the incident happened around 5 a.m. on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, near a RaceTrac gas station that has been the spot of multiple other shootings within the last year; one in December of 2022 that left a student dead and a second in April of this year.

Police say three of the victims in Sunday's shooting, one man and two women, are in stable condition after transporting themselves to the hospital. However, officers said the fourth victim, a woman, was transported by health officials to the hospital in critical condition.

Authorities believe the incident began as a dispute between two groups, which erupted into gunfire.

In a statement, the school added: "We are taking immediate action to ensure the safety of all our community by increasing patrols in the area. The safety of the Georgia State community is my top priority and we will continue to work with the APD to identify ways to make areas surrounding our campus more secure."

Still, after multiple incidents in the same area, some Georgia State students are voicing their frustration.

"I understand this is downtown. There's only so much that they can do and they do a lot," student Ike Aniagoh told 11Alive. "But I just feel that, you know, it's sort of unacceptable to have us going to school here and having shootings that just happen so consistently on our campus, and like, right around our housing."
