NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Five motorcycles and one car were involved in a crash on Sunday afternoon, according to the Covington Police Department.
The department said that Interstate 20, east of exit 90, was shut down for an extended period of time today because of the accident. It said that there were injuries and two people were sent to the hospital by a helicopter.
Georgia State Patrol said that the incident stemmed from a group of 75 to 100 motorcycles traveling east on I-20 from Fayetteville to Augusta on a permitted motorcycle ride. One motorcycle was going at a fast pace, trying to keep the group together. The agency said the motorcycle then hit a white SUV. Multiple other motorcycles then hit each other in an effort to avoid the first motorcycle and white SUV from colliding.
I-20 eastbound was shut down for around 90 minutes, and the two people who were life-flighted at the hospital were alert at the time, GSP said.
