73 MARTA bus drivers call in sick for the second day in a row

According to a MARTA spokesperson, the sickouts should not impact Super Bowl festivities.

ATLANTA — Seventy-three MARTA drivers called in sick Tuesday morning -- for the second day in a row.

On Monday, MARTA told 11Alive it will seek a court injunction after 80 bus drivers stayed home over apparent frustrations over contract negotiations. According to a MARTA spokesperson, the sickouts stemmed from a miscommunication over the new contract.

Although they agreed to a new contract on Saturday, it has not been approved by the necessary officials.

The second set of sickouts came as thousands of people continue to pour into the city for Super Bowl LIII and as a winter weather advisory was underway.

The cold temperatures mixed with the possibility of up to one inch of snow in Atlanta and surrounding areas. There was concern that the weather would leave many customers completely inconvenienced.

According to a MARTA spokesperson, MARTA has notified the union leadership that it will file a court injunction in Fulton County Superior Court on Wednesday morning to end the slow-down.

MARTA wrote, "[We have also] demanded that ATU leadership take immediate action disavowing the sick-out and demand that union members return to work."

MARTA said the sick out shouldn't impact Super Bowl festivities, because a majority of the customers will travel by rail.

Super Bowl LIII is Sunday, February 3rd.
