Off-duty Colorado deputy killed in Christmas Eve crash

The off-duty deputy was hit head-on while driving on Weld County Road 49, Colorado State Patrol said.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — The Adams County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday identified an off-duty deputy who died in a head-on crash on Christmas Eve.

Deputy Joshua Maloy, 31, had served with the Adams County Sheriff's Office for two years and nine months. He was a husband and father, and he previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

"We are grieving as an organization and law enforcement family and are awaiting answers as CSP conducts a full investigation into what occurred," the sheriff's office said in a release.

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said the crash happened a little after 5:20 p.m. Sunday on Weld County Road 49 south of Weld County Road 40. That's about 11 miles east of Gilcrest.

The driver of a vehicle crossed the centerline and hit Maloy's vehicle head-on, according to CSP. The driver of the vehicle that ran into the deputy's suffered life-threatening injuries, a CSP spokesperson said. There were two young children – a 1-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl – in the vehicle that hit Maloy's, according to CSP.

The girl suffered serious injuries, while the boy suffered minor injuries, CSP said. All of the people involved in the two-car crash were wearing seatbelts, according to CSP.

Troopers are still investigating, but do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

In a Christmas morning Facebook post, the Adams County Sheriff's Office said in part:

"As we rise to greet the day, there's an undeniable coldness that seizes our hearts, a stark reminder that we have lost another incredible member of the Sheriff's Office."
