Alligator spotted in Lake Lanier

Vacationers at Lake Lanier will need to be on the look out this holiday weekend.

An alligator, which is estimated to be about 2-to-3-feet long, has been seen on the north end of Lake Lanier near Don Carter State Park.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, while the gator does not pose a threat to public, people should still give the animal space.

Over the last month, the gator has been seen three to four times, with the most recent taking place on August 27. two fishermen told 11Alive they saw a gator in the water near Don Carter State Park on the Chattahoochee River.

In July, DNR received a still frame from a video showing a gator near Don Carter State Park on the north end of Lake Lanier. DNR officials believe the photos show the same alligator.

Rangers suspect someone had the alligator as a pet and then released it into the water. If captured, DNR offiicals will relocate it to a more natural habitat or an animal organization that can take care of it.

This is the second alligator to be spotted in Georgia water over the last couple of months.

Back in May, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources caught and transported an alligator located in the Chattahoochee River to an alligator range in south Georgia.
