'It's time to get answers' | APD reopens decades-long cold case of missing Atlanta mom, renewing hope for family

The family of Dymashal Cullins meets every year to canvass the city, passing out flyers in hopes of finding her.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department has reopened the case of a woman missing for 21 years -- giving her family a sense of renewed hope.

On Saturday, the family of Dymashal Cullins took to the streets, handing out flyers to help investigators figure out what happened to her.

Her family described Dymashal Cullins as special: a dedicated daughter, a caring friend and a fierce mom to five children.

But back in August of 2003, she disappeared and hasn’t been seen since. Her son, Kobe Jones, said that now that the case has been reopened, it is time for answers.

"It's been 21 years. They pronounced her deceased at seven years. I just really want to get the ball back rolling. We got the case back open; that’s an achievement. Now it's time to get answers," Jones said.

Cullins’ husband and mother reported her missing, saying she never came home on August 28, 2003. But her friends and family said at least one of her neighbors saw her the day she disappeared, pulling her car into the garage.

Atlanta police have assigned a new investigator to the case, and her family hopes this 21-year-old mystery will finally be solved.

I pray to God that something will come out of this," said Cullins' mom, Viola Corbitt.

Corbitt raised all of Cullins' children when she vanished. On Saturday, those children and grandchildren are out on Cleveland Avenue and Hapeville Road handing out flyers.

Corbitt said they’ve done this every year since she’s been gone.

"We’ve done this many years, not just one year or one time. We did it a lot of times also," Corbitt said.

Kobe Jones was just 6 years old when he last saw his mom. He believes she’s still out there, waiting to come home.

"I believe she’s still alive, and the only reason I say that is because of how strong she was as a person,"  Jones said.

Anyone with information about what happened to Dymashal Cullins is being asked to call the Atlanta Police Department.
