17-year-old in custody after carjacking near KSU led to campus-wide alert, Cobb Police say

No shots were confirmed to have been fired on the campus and no injuries have been reported, officials said.

KENNESAW, Ga. — One person is in custody after a carjacking near Kennesaw State University led to a campus-wide alert on Wednesday evening, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

KSU issued an all-clear and allowed normal campus operations to resume after they first shared on social media that armed suspects had been reported to be on campus.

The alert was issued at 6:21 p.m. and it said at least one armed intruder was reported at KSU's campus in Kennesaw. It encouraged those in the area to seek shelter in a secure location until further notice. KSU also asked students to lock all doors and windows.

In an update, KSU asked all those on campus to remain in place as police searched the area to confirm there was no longer a threat on campus.

Once the all-clear was given, the university provided more information explaining that no shots were confirmed to have been fired on the campus and no injuries had been reported.

In an update on Thursday morning, Cobb County Police said shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to 3340 Frey Rd. in Kennesaw, which is listed as the address for a Waffle House, for a reported carjacking.

Investigators said three men carjacked a 2023 Cadillac, which took off toward KSU's campus.

"The carjacked vehicle was located by personnel in the Real-Time Crime Center near the KSU campus," Cobb Police said in a news release.

KSU Police and Cobb Police were able to take a 17-year-old suspect into custody after a brief chase.

"The suspect was found with the stolen vehicle's keys in his possession," Cobb Police added.

Despite an extensive search for several hours, investigators said they were unable to find the remaining two suspects.

Authorities said their investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Cobb County Police Department Major Crimes Unit at 770-499-4111.
