Vigil held for 30-year-old woman found dead inside Atlanta park

An Atlanta family is begging for answers in the death of 30-year-old Ashley Chappell.

ATLANTA — Ashley Chappell was found dead early Saturday morning at Collier Park, in Atlanta.

Her family is now trying to piece together what happened in the hours that led up to Chappell's death.

About 100 people showed up to honor Chappell at the park the next day, during a balloon release.

Chappell's only sister, Shanelrica Trimble, remembers her fondly.

"She was loved, very loved," Trimble said. "You see all these people out here?"

Chappell's mother, Enrika Matthews, said she's just taking it day by day.

"It really feels overwhelming," Matthews said.

Trimble said she's hoping someone comes forward.

"If they did something to my sister, then yes, I want them to go to jail," she said.

Atlanta Police said they were called to Collier Park around 5 a.m. Saturday for a report of a person injured. When officers arrived, they found Chappell's body. And that's where the family said this mystery begins.

"No, I feel like somebody brought her here — dropped her body here," Matthews said.

The family has been talking to the neighborhood near the park and retracing Chappell's steps, looking for answers. Trimble said they found one clue. She said neighbors saw a white car being towed in the park's parking lot. And it had been sitting there a week.

"She plays the slot machine," Trimble said. "She had won some money. And they said that she left in a white car."

Police are still investigating the cause of death.

Matthews said her daughter didn't have a car and didn't frequent this park. That's why none of it is making sense to the family. She's now raising the six children Chappell leaves behind.

"She always said, 'Oh, I ain't going to stop having kids until I get me a boy.' And she finally had her boy," Matthews said.

Chappell's youngest is only one year old. The oldest is 14. Matthews describes her daughter as a loving mother, but also a handful who didn't take any mess. So, Matthews is adopting that same attitude. She's not taking any mess until her beloved daughter's killer is behind bars.

"If they're still on the street? Yes, I would like to see justice for my baby, yes I will, but right now, I'm feeling that I'm not getting any justice," Matthews said.

11Alive followed up with Atlanta Police. No word on a suspect, arrests, or if there is any foul play.
