ATHENS, Ga. – The man accused of killing an Athens police officer is talking to 11Alive about the case.
Jamie Hood is accused of fatally shooting Athens-Clarke County Senior Police Officer "Buddy" Christian and injuring SPO Tony Howard in March 2011.
Hood, who confessed to the shootings to 11Alive reporters Doug Richards and Jerry Carnes back in 2011, called 11Alive's Valerie Hoff to talk about his case.
"It's police brutality and it's police misconduct that led to this police shooting incident and they don't want nobody to know about it," Hood said.
Hood said that dash cam video allegedly shows police harming him before the shooting.
"Officer Howard had a camera on his police car and they've been hiding the video tape from 2011," Hood said. "The car got a camera on it and I have been requesting that they show this camera so people can see what really happened; they won't do it. They say I assassinated the police, that I shot the police for no reason and those are just ugly lies. I have a witness who saw Tony Howard dive through his car window and grab me. The man dived through his car window on me and the man told me he was going to shoot me."
Prosecutors say no such video exists.
Hood, who is facing the death penalty, is defending himself. In a motion filed Monday, public defenders said that Hood was paranoid and asked that he be declared incompetent to represent himself.
Hood says he's qualified to defend himself but fears the prosecution may prevent that from happening.
"If I disappear or if you see me in that courtroom, and I look like I'm drugged or spaced out, know that these people have drugged me up so the real facts of this case can't come out," Hood said.
Athens-Clarke County District Attorney Ken Mauldin said under the code of professional responsibility it would not be appropriate for him to comment on Hood's comments and case.
