Resolution about homelessness hopes to address number of people who seek shelter at Atlanta airport

While the city council's transportation committee approved the resolution, it still needs approval from the full council before it can be adopted.

ATLANTA — As Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport takes the title of world's busiest, city leaders are concerned as people experiencing homelessness continue to seek shelter at the airport.

Atlanta's City Council's Transportation  Committee voted to adopt a resolution that urges the airport's management to take more responsibility to help the unhoused population that often seeks shelter at the airport.

"The reason this is necessary is because we’re hearing reports that we have a homeless population that needs our help at the airport in the atrium," said Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet.

The measure would call for airport officials to make sure the individuals are safe and have the resources they need. It would also help keep travelers and airport visitors safe.

It states, "the domestic terminal, due to its accessibility, is the most impacted.”

Leaders recommended management expand the areas of the airport that are restricted to ticket holders only or those assisting other travelers.

Hartsfield-Jackson General Manager Balram Bheodaria said they already have initiatives in place, but they are open to more options.

"We’re very supportive in looking after and taking care of that population that shows up at the airport," said Bheodaria.

The general manager added that officials will investigate the legalities of the city’s resolution, to make sure its lawful.

While the city council's transportation committee approved the resolution, it does still need approval from the full council before it can be adopted.

The airport released the following statement below:

ATL’s top priority is to provide a safe, secure and efficient experience for the passengers and employees who utilize the facility every day. We continue to work with our partners to address any issues of people experiencing homelessness seeking shelter at ATL. The Airport will direct those needing aid to appropriate alternatives and wraparound services while maintaining operations at the world’s busiest airport.
