ATLANTA — Atlanta Botanical Garden has made a new step in its expansion to the BeltLine's northeast trail after buying land in a new agreement, according to officials.

For the expansion, ABG swapped land with Public Storage that would allow them to create a second entrance to the garden.

Officials added that they sold their land on Monroe Drive to Public Storage for $13.5 million and in return bought the company's facility on Piedmont Avenue for $40 million.

The announcement of the garden's expansion was made last year. Officials previously said when the project launched that the plan would allow guests to enter the Garden directly from the BeltLine and enjoy year-round displays and exhibition areas.

"Acquisition of the Public Storage property on Piedmont moves the Garden one step closer to assembling the land needed for expanding to the Atlanta Beltline by nearly eight acres and creating a more walkable, bikeable and livable urban environment," said a spokesperson for the garden.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle recently reported the Atlanta City Council corrected a proofreading mistake made during a previous update to the city's code after the land swap.

The city ordinance will prevent warehouses, self-storage buildings and distribution centers from rising within 500 feet of the BeltLine, the report stated. The ban will not affect ABG, considering it received a necessary permit beforehand, but it could prevent similar proposals from moving forward near the 22-mile corridor, the Business Chronicle stated in a report.

The garden currently plans to have the BeltLine expansion project completed by 2027, according to their website

Last year, the garden said it hoped to have the expansion done by 2026 in time for the 50th anniversary and FIFA World Cup.
