ATLANTA — Police have identified the three officers who were shot in the line of duty in Atlanta's Capitol View neighborhood over the weekend.
Officers Jason Hodge, Charles Smith and Darien Tabor were all injured by gunfire when responding to a report of an armed person Saturday evening.
Officers encountered a man with a handgun and began to approach him when he allegedly pulled the gun. A struggle ensued when an officer tackled and wrestled the man to the ground, and shots were fired.
One officer was shot in the shoulder, another in the leg, and the third was grazed. The suspect was fatally shot by officers at the scene.
According to Atlanta Police, Officers Smith and Tabor both underwent surgery and are recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital. Smith is scheduled for a second surgery as well. Officer Hodge was treated and released from the hospital on Sunday.
The officers previously spoke with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, telling him despite the circumstances, their spirits remain high.
"We've talked to the officers," Dickens said following the shooting. "They are in good spirits. As you (can) see, a lot of Atlanta Police Department officers are here supporting their brothers."
The suspect's name has not been released.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
