ATLANTA — An Atlanta Police Department officer is in the hospital and a person was taken into custody after a crash involving a police cruiser late Sunday night, authorities said.
It happened in the area of Lakewood Ave. SW and Pecan Dr. SW in Atlanta's Polar Rock neighborhood just around 11:41 p.m. when crews responded to a hit and run.
When they arrived, crews found a damaged police cruiser collided with another car.
The officer is expected to be OK after he had minor injuries from the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to APD.
Witnesses told police that the driver and a passenger ran away from the scene of the crash, which led to a search for the suspects with K-9 units.
After searching the woods nearby, APD said officers took a 39-year-old passenger into custody. He faces an open container charge after officers said they found multiple open cans of alcohol in the car.
The man was taken to the city jail. Police are still looking for the driver in the crash.
Georgia State Patrol will lead the investigation into the accident, according to APD.
