Atlanta is set to make history this Friday with the first-ever Kiki Exhibition Ball at City Hall, an event celebrating the artistry and resilience of Black LGBTQ+ youth while promoting HIV education and awareness. The event builds on the momentum of World AIDS Day, observed globally on Sunday, Dec. 1.
The Embassy Ball, hosted by LGBTQ+ advocate and Morehouse alumnus Legendary Overall Princess Louboutin, will feature ballroom competitions, including runway, vogue, and face categories. Presented by the Atlanta Kiki Leaders Fellowship, the event emphasizes HIV prevention, education, and advocacy.
Organizers aim to address critical gaps in HIV prevention, with studies showing that 67% of Atlanta’s Kiki Scene members lack access to peer-to-peer discussions on the subject. The event also serves as a space for healing and empowerment in response to challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community this year.
The Kiki Ball takes on special significance following a hate crime during Atlanta’s Global Black Pride celebration this summer. Charges under Georgia’s hate crime law were pursued against a Pennsylvania man for allegedly desecrating an LGBTQ+ flag. In the wake of such incidents, the ball serves as a platform for solidarity and resilience.
Sponsors of the event include Mistr, the International AIDS Society, and the Mayor’s Division of LGBTQ Affairs.
