BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — A man was severely burned in a residential fire early Tuesday morning in Statham, Ga., according to Barrow County fire investigators.

Investigators said that the blaze happened at about 4 a.m., and was caused by a propane leak from an improperly installed wall heater unit.

When an open flame came close to the leaking unit, it ignited, authorities said.

The burn victim was flown via helicopter to an area burn center with what was described as extensive burns over much of his body.

Officials with Barrow County Emergency Services remind everyone that while propane and natural gas are overall very safe to use, the installation or repair of appliances needs to be performed by trained professionals who are familiar with and follow appropriate building codes and regulations.

Homeowners and renters need to know where the main gas shut-off valve is for their residence and how to turn the supply off if needed.
