DeKalb County home damaged in fire, officials say

Crews were called to the scene around 8:30 p.m. Friday, officials said.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A fire that started in a basement sent DeKalb County fire crews to a home on Hilltop Drive Friday night.

DeKalb County Fire Battalion Chief Patrick Holcomb said they received the call around 8:30 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, two people were already outside and there was heavy smoke.

"They (firefighters) did their search around the side and found out it was a basement fire," he said.

Crews worked to extinguish the basement fire and then noticed the flames had made it to the main floor. They put water on the fire from the exterior and then entered the home.

"Once they got the fire knocked down from the exterior, we sent crews inside and they were able to finish putting out hot spots," he said.

Holcomb said he believes that one of the people who was outside of the home was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Police were also on the scene before they arrived, he added. Investigators will look into the cause of the fire.
