11Alive salutes historic South-View Cemetery, one of America's oldest African-American Cemeteries. Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr., father of famed civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., is buried here.

The father of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., “Daddy King,” as he was affectionately known, is buried in South-View with his wife Alberta King. Rev. King was an advocate of social change and racial equality and a famed preacher. As a member of the social action committee of the NAACP, he helped win equal salaries for black and white teachers in Atlanta. In 1936, he led a march of several hundred on city hall to demonstrate for voting rights. For years he worked at the negotiating table to improve the lot of Blacks in Atlanta.

In 1976 Rev. King supported Jimmy Carter for the United States presidency and played an important role in delivering black votes for Carter’s successful candidacy. He delivered benedictions at both the 1976 and 1980 Democratic Conventions. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was laid to rest in South-View cemetary after his assassination and later transferred to the Martin Luther King Center.
