MARIETTA, Ga. — The Cobb County Police Bomb Squad is responding on Monday evening after a homeowner found a Civil War-era object in her backyard, authorities said.

According to Marietta Police, all of Barnes Mill Road from Wallace to Souring was temporarily closed as authorities respond to this incident.

There is no immediate threat to the public, and the police are following standard safety protocols. Police recommended that drivers use alternate routes and hoped to have the roadway reopened within an hour or two.

Police said that the incident started when a homeowner was digging in her backyard and found a "Civil War-era unexploded ordnance." This is a term used for explosive weapons that have not gone off.

Police said the item is the size of a small cannonball and that the Cobb County Police Bomb Squad is taking it to a safe place to be destroyed.

This is an active investigation, police said.
