LOGANVILLE, Ga. — A missing persons report ended with the worst result possible for the mother of a 13-year-old boy with special needs.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said they are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident involving the boy who had been just reported as missing on Monday evening.

At around 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a pedestrian accident near 3334 Langley Road in unincorporated Loganville. The pedestrian, Jecolia Karikari-Prempe died as a result of his injuries.

Just prior to that, police said a woman on Sweet Ashley Way in unincorporated Loganville reported that her 13-year-old special needs son was missing. They said the caller was actively looking for the boy. Once officers arrived, they continued with the search until the accident call came in.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police believe Karikari-Prempe slipped out of the home while the mother was showering. When she went to check on him, she found that his tablet was in the garage, and the garage door was open. She drove around looking for him.

Investigators believe that Karikari-Prempe was attempting to cross Athens Highway when he was struck by a red minivan. Police say the location of the collision is about 1.3 miles from his home.

The driver of the minivan will not face any criminal charges, police said.
