DALLAS, Ga. — Tears, salutes and somber filled the West Ridge Church on Friday afternoon as community and family members said goodbye to a Paulding County deputy killed in the line of duty over the weekend.
Deputy Brandon Cunningham, 30, was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic dispute last weekend. The sheriff's office called it an "ambush."
The suspect, James Samuel Atkins, later died by suicide after barricading himself inside the home for hours, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said.
Community members, family and members of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office filled the church pews to support his family.
