Family of 16-year-old gunned down outside Atlanta high school asks for help paying funeral expenses

Bre'Asia Powell's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Noon. It will be held at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church on Fairburn Road.

ATLANTA — The family of a metro Atlanta teen who was shot and killed at Benjamin E. Mays High School is now calling for help to bury their loved one, according to a family spokesperson.

Bre'Asia Powell was enjoying a night out with her friends after a graduation party Sunday when she was shot.

Another teen was injured in the shooting.

While police have not said what led up to the shooting, Atlanta Public Schools said in a release that the teens were shot “during an unauthorized gathering” at the driveway exiting the school.

The spokesperson added in a press release that "Bre’Asia was a beacon of sunshine who radiated light wherever she travelled."

Powell was a rising Junior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.

She participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities that included cheerleading, dance, basketball, flag football and volleyball.

“Bre was not only talented and smart, but she was also beautiful, full of life and compassionate,” her mother, Necole Williams, said through tears.

Powell was also engaged in the Atlanta Teen Leaders Academy and was scheduled to participate in the Atlanta Mayor’s Summer Youth Job Program this summer.

“My daughter had her whole life in front of her.  The weight of pain that our family is feeling in this difficult time is unimaginable, and Bre’s absence has created a void that will never be filled,” said Williams.

Powell's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at noon. It will be held at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church on Fairburn Road.
