BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — A large fire broke out in a homeless camp near a daycare in Brookhaven, fire officials said Thursday.
It happened along Buford Highway near the Buckhead KinderCare Learning Center. 11Alive SkyTracker flew over the area and saw the flames burning behind the facility near a wooded area.
DeKalb County Fire confirmed the blaze started in a homeless camp behind the daycare but said there was no threat to the structure.
An employee at the facility told 11Alive they evacuated everyone there just as a precaution. DeKalb Fire said no injuries were reported.
Metro Atlanta has scene numerous fires happen at encampments over the years. Just a few weeks ago, roads around Cheshire Bridge had to be closed after a fire got out of control at a homeless encampment, authorities said. An Atlanta council member said in a recent newsletter that the repair timeline could be as long as 10 weeks.
As for the fire along Buford Highway Thursday, no other details were released from firefighters.
