ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Residents in a Buckhead neighborhood awoke Wednesday to see a flock of sheep, brought in to help clean a nearby park, being attacked by a pack of wild dogs.
Underwood Hills Park is a small park in a residential area near Interstate 75. For the past few years, Shady Brook Sheep has provided a flock to eat all of the kudzu in the park.
In a photo from last Friday, when neighbors came out to meet the sheep, families were all smiles.
Wednesday morning, a pack of wild dogs were able to enter the sheep's area through a tunnel beneath the protective electric fence. They attacked the sheep, killing most of them.
One of the dogs was captured early Thursday, in a trap set by Fulton County Animal Services.
The whole incident has troubled many residents in the area.
"I barely slept last night," said one visitor. "It's very hard to see something like that. And you know, it's a dangerous pack of animals that could take down 14 sheep."
Steve Whitlock, another resident, was also upset.
"A lot of little kids in the neighborhood, so everybody likes to bring their kids by to see the sheep and everything, and we're just wondering what do we tell our kids?" Whitlock said.
A lot of questions being asked here – were the sheep protected enough? Why couldn't Animal Services do more that day instead of simply setting traps? Most residents simply want to figure out where these dogs came from and how to make sure they don't come back.
