Suspect in custody after social media post causes soft lockdown at Buford City Schools, district says

BUFORD, Ga. — A suspect is in custody after a social media post caused a soft lockdown at all Buford City Schools, the school system said.

In a letter emailed to parents, Buford City Schools said the post, made Monday night, regarded Buford High School. The school system added that it was made aware of the post on Tuesday.

As a safety precaution, all Buford City Schools are under a soft lockdown until further notice. 

The district said in a statement that the Gwinnett County Police Department will patrol the area. 

"We are deeply troubled by the acts of this individual. We do not condone threats of any kind, even if the intent was not to do harm," the system said in its statement. 

The school system added in an updated letter sent to schools that the person who was in custody was not a current or former student. They have turned themselves in, officials added.

School officials also called the social media post a "threat" in their updated letter to parents. It also clarified that Gwinnett County Police were at a scene near the school that was unrelated to the school's alleged threat.

Buford City Schools was made aware of a social media post on November 14, 2023, regarding Buford High School. The suspect was identified and is in custody. All Buford City School System schools are operating under a soft lockdown protocol for added security. Gwinnett County Police Department is patrolling the area to keep students and staff safe throughout the day. We are deeply troubled by the acts of this individual. We do not condone threats of any kind, even if the intent was not to do harm. We appreciate the hard work of our Administrators, SROs and GCPD as they continue to keep Buford safe.
