Buford family's life turned upside down after tree crashes into home

The Birkett's are left homeless after a powerful storm rocked their neighborhood's trees last Thursday evening.

BUFORD, Ga. — A walk through their home now is their worst nightmare.

The Birkett's are soon to be a family of four. They're now displaced after a powerful storm rocked their neighborhood's trees last Thursday evening.

"It's a little wet in here now. Wow, it's worse than I thought," Angel Birkett said as she walked back into the home with 11Alive.

She and her husband would've been in the exact spot where a tree came crashing in. Their 1-year-old should've been eating dinner, but their routine changed that day.

"This is where we would've been sitting, and this is where everything came down. It could've been a lot worse. We were lucky. Two branches came through here near our room," Angel said.

Their life is turned upside down, and Monday's severe storms were even more concerning to them. The couple worried the weather would send another tree into their already damaged home. Most of their belongings covered in insulation now sits in bags in their driveway.

"Holy cow! It was insane because I was standing down that hallway; they were in the bathtub, so they didn't see anything, but when I looked down, I heard the big branches falling. It was a big boom, boom, boom and then a big dust cloud because all this insulation just covered everything. When it's fluffed up, it's thick," Dylan said.

Dylan and Angel Birkett hold their 1-year-old Magnolia days after storm.

On the ground outside, all that's left are cut-up tree stumps. A few of them now hold up the tarp that covers the damage done. The tree hit in the center of their home.

It only took 10 minutes for this family's entire life to be uprooted.

"This is where all the memories happened. All of the firsts are here. The nursery is here. He basically built it from the bottom up. It's really sad to leave it behind, but we have to," Angel said.

After three years, the Birkett's have been forced out of their home. As they make lists of what they need, they're salvaging anything they can.

But the cost to fix the hole left behind could leave them homeless.

"There is no good time for a tree to come through your house. Living paycheck to paycheck it's never a great; it's not an easy situation," Dylan said.

Extra stress is being put on the parents who have a baby on the way. Angel is 16 weeks pregnant and baby Brittney is due in October.

"Yesterday, we cleared everything out. Hopefully, we can get all of our furniture out of here, and I don't know, after that, it's playing one day at a time," Dylan said

The couple didn't have home insurance because of how expensive it is. They just couldn't afford it and are now trying to find a way to make it through to pay for the fixes at the home if it's salvageable. Angel is a huge Taylor Swift fan and is a part of a Swiftie Facebook group. After this happened, their online fundraiser was shared, and people they don't even know are trying to help them get settled before the baby is born in a few months.
