CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — A Carroll County sheriff's deputy was shot while executing a search warrant and rushed to the hospital Tuesday morning in critical condition, the sheriff's office said.
The suspect in the incident is dead, and there is no threat to the community, officials further reported.
A post on Facebook by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office said the deputy was serving a Georgia Bureau of Investigation search warrant off Don Rich Drive when the shooting occurred. The GBI confirmed that the warrant was for sexual exploitation as part of an ongoing investigation at the agency.
The sheriff's office later identified the deputy as Taylor Bristow.
"Please keep Investigator Taylor Bristow in your prayers, as he is currently in surgery at Grady after being shot this morning while executing a search warrant. We appreciate your support during this time and will provide updates as they become available," the sheriff's office wrote in another social media post.
In another update, the sheriff's office said Bristow is out of surgery. He's also had a CT scan and has been moved to the ICU.
"Unknown at this time his current condition. Please continue to pray!" the sheriff's office posted.
There were no immediate additional details about how the situation unfolded.
"Please pray for the Deputy, his family, and our department," the Facebook post said. "Further details will be released at a later time. Please avoid the area."
The full sheriff's office Facebook post stated:
Not a post we want to make, but to keep you all informed, we have had a Deputy shot while executing a GBI search warrant off Don Rich Drive, Carrollton this morning. The Deputy has been transported to the hospital and we don’t have updated condition at this time. Please pray for the Deputy, his family, and our department. Further details will be released at a later time. Please avoid the area.
The GBI said it "has been requested to investigate a shooting that happened at the scene of an active criminal investigation in Carroll County." The statement indicated no law enforcement officer had fired during this incident.
The incident occurred just days after a sheriff's deputy in Paulding County, Brandon Cunningham, was shot and killed in what was described as an ambush while responding to a domestic call.
On X, Gov. Brian Kemp wrote: "Marty, the girls, and I are praying for this Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy, along with his family and the entire law enforcement community. Yet again, we have been tragically reminded of the dangers men and women in uniform face on a daily basis for the public’s safety."
