FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Chair of the Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections, Cathy Woolard, has resigned after being reappointed as interim in April, according to a spokesperson for the county.
Her resignation comes about four months before the general election in November, when President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump will go head to head. Former President Trump is accused of violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election in Fulton County.
This year's election is seen as integral for Fulton County after Trump and his allies' alleged actions.
Woolard was appointed to the position in 2021 until her term ended on June 3, 2023. Chairman Robb Pitts first nominated Woolard in 2021.
That's when attorney Patrise Perkins-Hooker briefly took over until April of this year when she resigned. According to the Fulton County website, Woolard is listed as a current member and chairperson for the board.
The reigns were then handed back over to Woolard when she was reappointed in the interim after Perkins-Hooker's resignation right before the May primary.
According to a bio on the U.S. House of Representatives website, Woolard formerly served as the President of the Atlanta City Council and as an elected member. She was also an early champion for the Atlanta BeltLine, which continues to transform rail corridors around the city.
The bio added that she also led the City Council to pass the first comprehensive civil rights bill in the Peach State, protecting residents from housing, employment and other discrimination. She has also previously worked at the international aid organization CARE.
Woolard ran for mayor of Atlanta seven years ago. She has lobbied at the State Capitol for left-leaning groups, including Fair Fight Action, the voting rights group founded by Democrat Stacey Abrams.
Woolard's resignation is effective July 25. 11Alive has reached out to confirm if a permanent replacement will be appointed.
