WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — Firefighters have been working for days to put out a massive wildfire in the Chattahoochee National Forest off Hwy 356 northeast of Unicoi State in White County.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire started on Saturday and was only 50% contained at approximately 184 acres on Monday. They added there had been high winds, which can also contribute to the problem.
However, Tuesday as of 9 a.m., officials said the situation was 100% contained.
The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests and Georgia Forestry Commission had a command team in place as firefighters worked to contain the flames.
"Fire crews successfully kept the fire within control lines yesterday and strengthened and improved those lines," the U.S. Forest Service said.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, firefighters will continue to patrol and find any remaining hotspots that could threaten control lines. Additionally, fire crews are working to install water bars and spreading seed on the fire lines to reduce potential erosion.
Smith Creek Trail has been closed for the safety of hikers. There are no road closures or evacuation warnings in place, the U.S. Forest Service said.
Anna Ruby Falls' recreation area is open to the public at this time.
