Fire prompts road closure along Cheshire Bridge Road

Here is what we know.

ATLANTA — A fire broke out along Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanta Wednesday night, according to Atlanta Fire Rescue.

The flames were visible on the street and fire authorities were on scene hours later on Thursday.

Cheshire Bridge Road is closed from Lenox Road to Faulkner Road in both directions.

Firefighters responded to a call about a small fire under the bridge around 9:15 p.m. When they arrived, they noticed flames coming from gas lines. An initial fire damaged a 4-inch natural gas line, causing the pipe to ignite in flames. The fire began to grow and power was turned off in the area as crews worked to contain the situation.

Atlanta Gas Light was also called to the scene. Officials said the plan is to try to turn off the gas this morning while the fire completely burned out just before 5 a.m.

A spokesperson from Southern Company said the initial fire was not started by natural gas. Instead, the fire damaged a four inch natural gas line, causing the pipe to ignite.

Authorities say the closure could last for a few days due to possible damage to the bridge.

It's unclear at this time how the fire started.
