ATLANTA — An 11-year-old child died during a house fire in Spalding County Sunday morning, according to the county's fire chief, Mike Byrd.
The child has since been identified by the Spalding County Medical Examiner's Office as Katelynn Simonds.
The fire chief noted that the original call occurred around 5:29 a.m. for a house fire on Sidney Drive.
Crews on the scene apparently encountered "heavy fire conditions on first and second floor." They said the child was found on the second floor.
