ATLANTA — The City of Atlanta has partnered with the Young Women's Christian Association of Atlanta (YWCA) to bring affordable housing near Campbellton Road SW.
Invest Atlanta funded the $1.48M acquisition of the property. Plans for the property include creating a mixed-income, transit-oriented development along southwest Atlanta, said Josh Humphries, Senior Housing Advisor to Mayor Andre Dickens.
City officials expect at least 100 units affordable housing units to come from the property.
"Our goal to create housing where the teacher and the principal all the opportunity to live in the same neighborhood and thrive," Humphries added.
In an emailed press release, Mayor Andre Dickens announced the city had officially closed on an 11-acre property on Barge Road, near the city's proposed MARTA Campbellton Corridor Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
"This is yet another project on the path to 20,000 affordable units and another successful effort led by the Affordable Housing Strike Force," said Mayor Dickens in an emailed press release. "This investment will ensure affordable housing units on a corridor which will soon undergo a major transportation and economic transformation."
Property sale proceeds will go toward the YWCA of Greater Atlanta programming and initiatives, including restoring the Phillis Wheatley Westside YWCA at the intersection of Mitchell Street, Tatnall Street and Martin Luther King Drive.
The Phyllis Wheatley Westside YWCA is scheduled to open in 2025. It will house resources focused on the needs of women and their families on the westside of Atlanta.
