EAST POINT, Ga. — East Point has fired its city manager, according to a statement from the city government on Tuesday.
The decision to terminate Deron King was not explained, but in August, residents showed up for public comment to address a phishing scam -- where more than $1 million was wired to a fake company to pay fake invoices.
“We greatly appreciate Mr. King's service to the city and wish him the best in his future endeavors," the city said.
The city also announced its interim manager, Jeffrey Reeves, who has over 30 years of city government experience.
"His extensive experience has provided him with a deep understanding of how a city operates, making him well-suited to lead during this transitional period," a city spokesperson said.
East Point Councilman Joshua Butler, IV said the city is in the process of trying to get back the $1.2 million in missing taxpayer dollars.
“We were able to recover an immediate $400,000, and with our insurance coverage, we're looking to replace hopefully most of that money," Butler said.
Reeves has already taken over the responsibilities of the city manager position.
