JONESBORO, Ga. — A Clayton County Sheriff's correctional officer finds himself behind bars and accused of assaulting an inmate earlier this week.
According to a warrant obtained by 11Alive, Delvan Jones allegedly struck an inmate seven times unprovoked at the Clayton County Jail on Sunday.
Jones faces two separate charges. He's the second Clayton County correctional officer to face charges in November.
Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen said during a sit-down interview in October he wanted to clean up the jail.
“Staffing has to be looked at and changed again," Allen previously said.
Now, a month after that interview, Jones is charged with violation of oath and simple battery for allegedly assaulting the inmate inside the jail. His POST record shows he took courses in de-escalation techniques and use of force in 2022.
“Everybody that comes to my jail should be treated with respect and with dignity," Allen previously said.
Jones is the ninth Clayton County Jail correctional officer or employee charged with a crime while on the job in the past six months.
“Everything I do is going to be to protect the citizens, the employees and all the contractors and inmates of the jail," Allen said. "We have to get to a point where we work together as a government body.”
Court records show a judge denied Jones' bond. His next court date is scheduled for December 22.
U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has called for a federal probe into the Clayton County Jail and called conditions there "inhumane and dangerous."
