Cobb County deputies use drone to take wanted suspect into custody

Deputies were serving a warrant at an Extended Stay America hotel at 1967 Leland Dr. in Marietta, when they encountered the suspect.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County Sheriff's deputies used drone technology to take a wanted suspect into custody on Wednesday.

Deputies with the Cobb County Sheriff's Office Field Operations Division were serving a warrant at an Extended Stay America hotel at 1967 Leland Dr. in Marietta, when they encountered the suspect.

The sheriff's office said the suspect fought with deputies and then ran into the woods.

Additional deputies and members of the K-9, F.A.S.T. and drone units came out to assist.

The drone unit followed the suspect into a nearby apartment complex off Woodchase Lane. 11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene where the suspect appeared to have been taken into custody at the Forest Ridge on Terrell Mill Apartments.

The suspect was found hiding in the laundry room of the apartment building and was taken into custody without incident, the sheriff's office said.

Further charges will follow, according to the sheriff.

“This is a great example of using cutting-edge, emerging technology to assist in keeping Cobb citizens safe,” Sheriff Craig Owens said. “We have one of the most robust drone units in the metropolitan Atlanta area. I’d like to thank our Field Operations and Special Unit teams for their diligence.”
