COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Cobb County middle school student is critically hurt after being hit by a car while walking home Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson from the school district said.

Authorities said it happened at 4:20 p.m. on Sewell Mill Road near Danforth Drive, which is also near Dodgen Middle School.

Cobb County Police said their preliminary investigation revealed a 61-year-old driver of a 2017 Mazda CX-5 was traveling west on the road -- at the same time a 12-year-old boy was crossing.

That's when authorities said the boy entered the Mazda's path while he was crossing the road -- outside a marked crosswalk.

EMS took the boy to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Atlanta with serious injuries, the police department said.

"We ask our community to join us in helping keep students safe by driving slowly through school zones," the school district added in a statement.
