COBB COUNTY, Ga. — In a county with a history of turning down transit expansion, Cobb County appears to be possibly hopping on board.
Cobb County leaders said ridership on public transportation has increased since the pandemic and are predicting it would quadruple if routes were expanded.
The Atlanta-Region Transit Authority approved Cobb County's proposed project list Thursday, which now makes it possible for leaders to vote on the transit referendum next week to see if the measure will land on the November ballot.
"I think it would be a great idea because there is a lot of customers that use public transportation and I think they would enjoy getting around in a better way," said one traveler.
The referendum would create a 30-year-one penny sales tax to fund the project. It would include the expansion of high-capacity transit, on-demand micro transit, as well expand local bus routes.
On Tuesday, county commissioners will vote on whether to place the referendum on the November ballot. If approved, it would be one of the few votes in Cobb County history on transit.
"Worth it, yes I do," one person said. "Because the benefits would definitely benefit the customer."
