Witnesses say driver was racing another car after fiery fatal crash off Cobb Parkway

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — One person is dead after a fiery crash near Acworth, Sunday night.

According to authorities, it happened around 5:30 p.m. off Cobb Parkway, just north of Cedarcrest Road.

According to Cobb County Police, a white 1999 Chevy S10 was heading south on Cobb Parkway and was approaching Cedarcrest Road. Authorities said the driver of the car braked hard for some reason, causing the car to skid and rotate as it left the road; it ultimately crashed into a tree at the wood line before catching fire.

Shortly after, Cobb County fire officials said first responders went to the crash and found the vehicle "fully involved with fire."

Police said the crash killed the driver of the Chevy, identified as 48-year-old Michael Morton of Acworth. Morton's 17-year-old passenger, meanwhile, was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, police said witnesses told officers Morton may have been racing another vehicle - possibly a Ford Mustang - before the crash.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact police at 770-499-3987.
