Two people hurt after reports of commercial fire, explosion in Cherokee County: Officials

This is a developing story.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A commercial fire caused two people to be injured and sent to the hospital in Cherokee County on Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 4 p.m., Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to reports of a fire and explosion at Carmichael Development on Univeter Road. When they arrived, firefighters discovered a dump truck and Conex trailer engulfed in flames -- along with flames touching the exterior of a commercial structure.

Two people at the scene had varying degrees of burn injuries and were sent to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, officials said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and found through a search that there were no other victims.

Although the fire was extinguished, firefighters dealt with a significant amount of diesel fuel that spilled onto the ground with assistance from the CCFES Hazardous Materials team. Univeter Road was closed in both directions from Chattin Drive to Jesse McCollum Road but has reopened as of 5:50 p.m.

Officials said that fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
