Cops: Man attacks deputy with fire extinguisher

A manhunt is underway for a man accused of setting his home on fire and attacking a deputy
Barry Black

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. -- Sixty deputies are on the hunt for a man they say attacked one of their own.

According to Carroll County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Brad Robinson, Barry Black set his home on fire before attacking a deputy with a fire extinguisher.

Tuesday morning, three deputies arrived at the home outside of Temple, Ga. along with Black's estranged wife and a protective order she'd obtained. They had an appointment to protect her while she picked up her belongings.

Robinson said all was going well until something upset Black. He allegedly went to the back of the house and started a fire in a closet. The situation progressed and Black is accused of striking one deputy on the arm with a fire extinguisher. Then, another deputy fired a Taser and struck Black, who was able to remove the prongs and flee into the woods on foot.

"He obviously didn't want her to get her belongings, and these things go from zero to 60 just that quick," said Robinson.

None of the deputies was injured.

Black's known firearms were accounted for but Robinson said he could have another one.

Robinson said dozens of law enforcement officers, SWAT teams, K-9 Deputies, the state's heat-imaging helicopter, and more are trying to flush Black out.

Robinson said they hope to come to a peaceful resolution.
