Covington officer Matt Cooper's one gesture showed how far he's come since shooting

Officer Cooper is responding to questions as his recovery continues.

Covington Police Department officials said Officer Matt Cooper is continuing to make progress as he recuperates from his injuries in a statement they released Wednesday morning.

They said he is responding to questions through the squeeze of a hand and has waived to his nurse as she left his room.

Cooper has been hospitalized in serious condition since he was shot in the head while chasing a shoplifting suspect on Labor Day.

The suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Aaron Fleming, along with two others, was being pursued after a shoplifting call at a Covington Walmart store.

Fleming later was found dead from what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
