COVINGTON, Ga. — Over a week after an apparent argument over a dog at one home led to a deadly shooting at another, police have released the name of a third suspect in the crime.
Police believe the victim, Chelvis Hillman, was intervening in an incident where three men allegedly shot at a dog at his father's home on Fowler Street.
"The first location, there was a dispute inside a residence where an individual actually fired a shot inside a house at a dog that was approaching the shooter," Covington Police Captain Ken Malcom said. "After this occurred, the son of the homeowner arrived an argument ensued about the shots being fired."
But the dispute apparently followed Hillman when he left for another home on Washington Street.
"Three individuals entered the residence, robbed him and one of the individuals shot the victim," Malcom said.
Hillman later died from the injury - a gunshot wound to the stomach.
One witness who was in the home said he heard the gunshot and went to investigate. But he was reportedly met by an armed man in the kitchen who told him to empty his pockets and put everything on the table.
In the next day, police managed to take two of the suspects into custody. But a third remained on the run - and still is, over a week after the deadly shooting.
Police believe that suspect is 18-year-old Keyondre Preston. He now faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault and murder. Investigators believe he frequents the Decatur area and has gang affiliations - though it's unknown if the Covington incident was gang-related.
The identification of a third suspect comes just one day after family members said their final goodbye to Hillman at a memorial service held Wednesday.
In his obituary, Hillman was described as a loving father of four and grandfather to two, with a third on the way.
"This was a very senseless, tragic loss of life," Malcom said. "We want to do everything we can, you know, for our victim to make sure that he receives justice."
Police said he is considered armed and dangerous. They're hoping anyone with information on his location will call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 (TIPS). Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
