COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Family and friends are asking for prayers after a tragic Coweta County house fire left six people dead and several others injured early Monday.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the charred home, and the video shows the severe damage and debris from the flames.
In the hours since the fire, a family member of those impacted said they've received support since the tragedy.
"We appreciate the outpouring of love and prayer during this most difficult time," a family member said to 11Alive in a statement. "We cannot begin to know where to start in rebuilding. Right now we are asking for prayers and privacy as we navigate this unimaginable tragedy."
According to county officials, Fire Rescue responded to the home in the 1300 block of Macedonia Road around 5 a.m. Crews arrived within minutes and found that over 50% of the home was already engulfed in flames.
"As crews started to extinguish the fire, we started our search and rescue efforts," said Robby Flanagan, fire chief for Coweta County Fire Rescue.
Officials said 11 people were inside when the fire broke out. Six people died from their injuries, and the other five were taken to the hospital. A family member told 11Alive Monday afternoon that the survivors were still in the hospital.
“You never want to see anything like this happen to anybody," said neighbor Ryan McMillian.
He said he heard cries for help and went outside to see what was happening.
"As I got up here, there was an adult male, adult female and three children, and they were all covered in soot," he said.
He said he asked if others were in the home and that's when he learned there were people still inside who needed.
"We tried to see if we could do anything for them, but the house was pretty much engulfed at that point," he said.
