K-9 shot as deputies, GSP search for 'armed and dangerous' suspect in Coweta County: Officials

Deputies said the search is ongoing in the area of S. Hwy. 29/Calico Loop.

GRANTVILLE, Ga. — A K-9 was shot as the Coweta County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol search for a suspect described as "armed and dangerous" Wednesday afternoon in Grantville. The suspect ran away from the scene following a car chase, police said.

Deputies said the search is ongoing in the area of S. Hwy. 29/Calico Loop.

The sheriff's office wrote on Facebook that the public is being asked to stay away from the area.

"Those in the area are asked to get inside and lock the doors and report any suspicious activity," the sheriff's office said.

Sandy Springs posted on X  that the injured K-9 was taken to Blue Pearl Hospital via an emergency helicopter for surgery.

Sandy Springs Police posted a video on Instagram where the helicopter can be seen landing on Abernathy Road. The Sandy Springs Police Department said the K-9 works with the GSP.

It's currently unclear how the K-9 was shot or who shot the K-9.

First Lady Marty Kemp posted on X, asking the Georgia community to pray for the K-9's "swift recovery and for comfort for his handler and family."

Glanton Elementary, which is about two miles from Calico Loop, was on code yellow precautions. The dismissal was delayed, but students were released at 3:30 p.m.

The school district described a code yellow to 11Alive as "not a lockdown, but higher alert," and the Newnan Times-Herald reported last year that the district considers code yellow not a sign of immediate danger on campus or inside school buildings, but something that is initiated during an off-campus law enforcement situation.

The sheriff's office told 11Alive in a separate statement that GSP is the primary agency in the situation.

This is a developing story. 11Alive is working to learn more about how the situation began.

The 11Alive Skytracker also flew over the scene where several police patrol cars can be seen surrounding railroad tracks near a wooded area.
