ATLANTA — As more people are staying at home during the coronavirus outbreak, wildlife is appearing throughout urban areas.
Atlanta Coyote Project shared an image of a coyote in Candler Park, in a Facebook post.
“This coyote was spotted at 8:00am crossing Clifton Road in Candler Park. Typically, urban coyotes tend to avoid humans and are generally not seen during daylight hours. However, fewer cars on the road might change that. Similar sightings have been seen in other urban areas like Chicago. And lighter traffic evidently makes crosswalks optional,” the post states.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said coyotes are highly-adaptable animals and neighbors should watch their small pets and not leave food outside in order to reduce the likelihood of an attack.
“The more comfortable they [coyotes] get in neighborhoods, it’s more likely things like this can happen,” Urban Wildlife Program Manager Kaitlin Goode said.
Dr. Chris Mowry with the Atlanta Coyote Project told 11Alive that they have received more than 500 coyote sightings in Atlanta in 2019.
