Georgia fire chief dies in Atlanta

He's spent nearly 25 years of his life dedicated to the county and its citizens.

Crisp County is mourning the death of one of its local heroes.

Crisp County Fire Chief Jonathan Windham has died, according to authorities. Fire officials said he passed away at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.

"He was a great leader and firefighter," the Crisp County Fire Rescue Facebook post said. "We as a department and a family mourn his loss and celebrate his life and legacy."

On Wednesday, the Crisp County Sheriff's Office posted a video of first responders helping escort the chief's body back to Crisp County. They invited citizens to show their respect. 

People pulled over to the side of the road as law enforcement officers passed them. 

Services for Windham will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. at Cordele First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
